Are you constantly tired, emotionally drained, or just going through the motions?

If so, you’re not lazy or broken—you’re likely experiencing burnout, and your body is trying to tell you something.

As a nutrition therapist, dietitian and yoga teacher, I support people who feel overwhelmed, depleted, and disconnected from their bodies. In this post, we’ll explore five common signs of burnout and how to respond with gentle, intuitive care—not more pressure.


1. You’re Always Tired—Even After a Full Night’s Sleep

If 7–8 hours of sleep no longer helps you feel refreshed, your exhaustion may go deeper than physical tiredness.

Burnout and chronic stress can overload your nervous system, leaving you emotionally and mentally fatigued—even if you’re technically “resting.”

🧘‍♀️ Try this: Begin your day with 5 minutes of gentle breathwork or simply lie in stillness. Sometimes it’s not more sleep we need—but better quality rest that supports nervous system regulation.


2. You Feel Disconnected from Your Body

You may find yourself skipping meals, ignoring hunger cues, or zoning out during everyday tasks. Many people experiencing burnout feel numb, checked out, or disconnected from their body’s signals.

This is often a self-protective response to stress, but long-term disconnection can make it harder to know what your body truly needs.

🍽️ Try this: Before your next meal, pause. Take one deep breath. Ask:
Am I hungry? What would feel nourishing in this moment?
This is the beginning of reconnecting with your body through intuitive awareness.


3. You’ve Lost Interest in Things You Used to Enjoy

One of the most overlooked symptoms of burnout is the absence of joy. If movement, cooking, socializing, or hobbies feel like a burden, your emotional energy may be depleted.

🌿 Try this: Give yourself permission to do less. Reconnect with pleasure in small, accessible ways—like playing calming music while you cook or taking a walk with no destination.

Even small sparks of joy support emotional and nervous system healing.


4. You Feel Irritable or Emotionally Flat

Burnout can make you feel like you’re constantly on edge—or like you don’t feel much at all. You may swing between irritability and emotional numbness.

This is a sign that your nervous system is dysregulated, stuck in fight, flight, or freeze mode.

🧠 Try this: Mindful movement is a gentle way to regulate your system. Try 5–10 minutes of stretching, a few rounds of deep breathing, or a calming yoga pose like child’s pose or cat-cow.

The goal isn’t to perform—it’s to reconnect.


5. You Crave Rest, But Struggle to Give Yourself Permission

Many people experiencing burnout feel guilty for resting. You might say, “I should be doing more,” or feel like you haven’t earned rest.

But your worth isn’t tied to your productivity. Rest is not a reward—it’s a necessity.

💛 Try this: Write yourself a permission slip:

“It’s okay to rest. My worth is not measured by what I get done.”

Then take one small step that honors your body’s need—without guilt.


Final Thoughts: Listen to What Your Body Is Asking For

Your body speaks in sensations—tiredness, tension, cravings, fatigue. The more you practice body awareness, the more clearly you’ll hear what it truly needs.

  • You don’t need to push through.
  • You don’t need to earn your rest.
  • You’re not lazy—you’re likely burnt out and disconnected.
